Makins History
Founded in 1956, Mr E Makin invested in 350 acres of farming land and a farm yard which today is the location of Makins large office complex and 200,000sq ft of storage facilities. Within the purpose built 12 acre site Makins boasts 100,000sq ft of chilled storage space that has purpose built racking to store palleted product including fresh produce. The farm was and still is an arable farm. But back in the 60s a variety of crops were grown including rhubarb, cabbage, swedes, peas, potatoes and cereals. The farm now currently owns 1000acres of arable land and grows sugarbeet, cereals and strawberries. In 1997, Managing Director Mr CW Makin diversified into grading potatoes for a large multiple retailer. Initially starting with 4000 tonnes, this sector of the business has grown significantly with Makins now grading in excess of 45,000tonnes in a 6 month period. Makins is now the largest importer of new potatoes in the UK. |
